Memorial City Plaza:Modernized with ModuLED Stealth DC Series
Specifier: Andy Powell (LDA Lighting Design Alliance)
Designer: Dawna Houchin (Ziegler Cooper Architect)
Location: Houston, Texas
Overview:
Memorial City Plaza, a 927,000-square-foot complex in Houston, Texas, features two multi-story office buildings and a shopping mall. Managed by MetroNational, the complex underwent a major renovation to modernize its dated structures and attract Class A tenants. The renovation aimed to transform the buildings into a cohesive, contemporary space, aligning with the high-end work environment desired by tenants.
However, the complex architecture—with angular layouts and undulating ceilings—presented unique challenges. Lead designer Dawna Houchin sought a lighting solution that would integrate seamlessly into the space and support her vision for a sleek, modern design.
The Challenge:
The aging buildings featured sharp angles and varying ceiling heights, complicating the task of installing a consistent, modern lighting system. These architectural constraints demanded a lighting solution that could adapt to irregular shapes and tight spaces while still providing the sleek, cohesive environment Houchin envisioned.
“We needed something sleek and consistent that could work with the odd shapes and uneven ceilings of the buildings,” said Houchin. The goal was to unify the lighting across the entire complex, enhancing key areas like lobbies and common spaces while ensuring a high-end, professional atmosphere.
The Solution: ModuLED Stealth DC Series
The ModuLED Stealth DC series emerged as the ideal solution for Memorial City Plaza’s renovation. With its slim profile and versatile design, the Stealth DC series adapted effortlessly to the angular architecture and varying ceiling heights, eliminating the need for extensive structural modifications.
Flexible for Challenging Installations: The Stealth DC fixtures, with their sleek and slim design, fit seamlessly into the building’s angular layouts and tight spaces, ensuring a clean and consistent look without disrupting the architectural elements.
Powerful Lighting for Varying Heights: The high lumen output of the Stealth DC series provided sufficient illumination for areas with high ceilings, while its adaptability ensured balanced lighting in spaces with lower ceilings. This created a consistent lighting experience throughout the complex, from office floors to public spaces.
Sleek, Consistent Aesthetic: The minimalist design of the Stealth DC fixtures complemented the modern renovations, particularly in the lobbies where new floor-to-ceiling glass panes allowed natural light to flood in. The Stealth DC series maintained a uniform aesthetic that enhanced the building’s overall appeal.
The Results:
The Memorial City Plaza renovation was a resounding success, largely thanks to the flexibility and performance of the ModuLED Stealth DC series. The lighting solution not only overcame architectural challenges but also contributed to the creation of a cohesive, premium environment that tenants appreciate.
“My client was very happy with the results,” noted Houchin, adding that the project has already led to repeat business for her team. The lighting design received industry recognition, earning a Lumen West Award of Merit for Interior Lighting Design from the Illuminating Engineering Society.
The project demonstrated ModuLED’s ability to meet complex design challenges while maintaining high-quality performance, making Memorial City Plaza a bright, attractive destination for Class A tenants.
